1.Operation button

This operation button is operated manually by pushing a switch between ON & OFF. Some kinds of switches are available with printed symbols on the button to specify the ON/OFF condition.

2.Sealing rubber

Sealing rubber is one type of rubber component that seals the switch to protect it from moisture.

3.Spring

The spring in the switch is a semi-elliptical leaf spring that is connected through contact to the end. Once the switch is turned ON then the spring moves the contact instantly to the fixed contact & uses high contact power for a stable contact between the two. But, when the switch is turned OFF, the contact’s release force can be increased which helps in avoiding contact welding.

4.Cover

The cover of the switch is a resin component that wraps the internal case to protect the sealing rubber into position.

5.Contacts & Terminals

The fixed contact is designed by connecting a contact to one of the ends of the terminal. The rocker switch wiring diagram is shown below. This circuit can be built with a battery, a fuse, a rocker switch, and a motor. The connection of this circuit can be done like this; Here, the power pin of the switch gets power from a 12v battery. A fuse is connected in between a battery and a switch. Sometimes, rocker switches are able to bear a certain amount of current, so fuses are connected in between the power source & power pin of the switch to protect the switch from excessive current otherwise it could harm otherwise destroy the motor. This circuit is used to turn ON and OFF the motor. Once the switch is turned ON, then the DC motor will be turned ON and operates immediately. Once the same switch is turned OFF then the DC motor will be turned OFF, so it will not work because it doesn’t get power from the power source like a 12v battery.

 

How Do You Install a Rocker Switch

 

If it were me doing this - the first thing that I would do is to look for blanked-out switch positions on the front fascia and dashboard. The wiring harness may be standard over a wide range of variants and installed options and so that blanked-out switch position might have wiring loom connectors just waiting to be used, right behind it.If so, I’d use the colour coding/marking of those wires, together with the vehicle’s circuit diagram, to see if it will do the job needed. It quite possibly is already wired to the fuse panel - but may need a fuse to be inserted. There may even be a blank in the panel that needs to be replaced with a fuse holder.

 

If that all looks good - it’s often possible to get the correct switch as a spare, from the main dealer or elsewhere. That switch may come with a range of markings - if none is suitable, there is probably also a blank one in the range. The switch doesn’t need to have the same or higher rating than the application - a low voltage DC solid state relay will handle the load current switching.Only if that strategy fails, and, IME, it rarely does (other than on much older vehicles) - then I’d identify a suitable place, buy a suitable switch and follow the instructions that came with the switch. Including ensuring that the supply side is fused . I wouldn’t worry too much about the current rating of the “suitable” switch - better to use it to control that low voltage DC solid state relay. The relay can be located to minimise the conductor requirement for the load.

 

That switch may be just directly controlling a low current signal going to the car’s computer. If the car utilises a bidirectional data bus to control peripherals - often even better. Because the bus goes throughout the vehicle - so, even though the switch was intended to control front fog lights, the decoder needed to do that can be hung anywhere on the bus. So it can be used to control the power going to a rear fitted reversing camera.
